Sara Pennellini

Hi! My name is Sara Pennellini, an Environmental Engineer. I am currently working as a Post-Doctoral Research fellow at the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering, University of Bologna, since June 2022, within the “Puracqua” project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

I studied at the University of Bologna, where I got bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Environmental Engineering, specializing in land and soil protection. I continued there with my Ph.D. study and completed a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering in June 2022.

My main research topics include the valorisation of wastewater resources by applying appropriate technologies and natural systems for wastewater treatment in low- and middle-income countries. During my research activities, I had the opportunity to travel a lot for conferences, workshops, dissemination, and fieldwork, and I am collaborating with the University College of Applied Sciences - Gaza (Palestinian territory), the University of Cape Coast – Ghana, and six South African Universities.

Currently, I am also working in a multidisciplinary team, ranging from environmental engineers to medical doctors, inside an Erasmus+ capacity building project in the contest of the “One Health” (Elephant).

I am also a member of Early Career Scholars of the Italian University Coordination for Development Cooperation (CUCS) and Innovation & Communication Working Group of YWPIT.

I love communicating with experts from other countries, sharing knowledge, and gaining experience from different perspectives, trying to find new ideas to address the emerging environmental issues.

In addition, I am a passionate volleyball and beach volleyball player and scuba diver.

Cheers,
Sara!
